How to manage your teen's mood swings?

 Teenagers have a lot going on physically, mentally and emotionally. They are trying to cope up with the changes, half of the things they do not understand and sometimes, they do not know who to talk to or about what. Growing up takes a toll on them. They are always in conflict with themselves, trying to figure out things and their own identity. Commonly, teenagers become moody and irritated. Times have changed a lot, and parents sometimes are not able to understand what their kids are going through. It becomes challenging to deal with them. Parents should know that it is just a phase, and this shall too pass. Overall, they should not worry too much about their moodiness.

Here are a few tips on how to deal with your teen's constant and turbulent mood swings:

1. The most sensible and essential thing to do is to give your kid space. As they are transitioning into an adult, they are maturing and becoming independent, and all they need is a little privacy. They want their parents to let them decide what's good for them and give them the right to make their own decisions. For well-meaning parents, it is the toughest thing to do. Parents should believe in their children and show confidence in their judgement. It is the instinct of parents to rush in whenever they see their child in distress, but as they grow up, parents cannot always swoop in and take away all their problems. It is time they learn to handle things.

2. Be there for your child when he needs you. As parents, you need to listen more and talk less. Let them come to you and talk instead of you trying to force a conversation on them, and it will only drive them away. They should know that you will always be there for them and they can share with you. Create a relationship of trust and security. Do not be judgemental, disregard their feelings or belittle their experience, this will only create a conflict of interest, and they might not come to you in future. Be honest with them and give them your opinion but do not force it on them. You should be open and understanding.

3. Help your kid cope up with life. Most of the frustration is coming from the things they are not able to understand, or the approach they have is not working anymore. This brings up uncertainties and makes them anxious about the future. When your child is unable to adapt to the new changes in his life, communicate openly with him and help him understand the difference. You may provide them with solutions but let him contribute first. He should feel like he owns it; this will help him to handle things easily in future. It helps in building confidence and understanding his judgement.

4. Instead of getting into a heated argument with your annoyed teen, decide to take a step back and wait till things cool off. Raising your voice will only make things worse. The best approach is to remain composed and patient when talking with a moody teenager. Talk to them in a calm but firm manner and hold them responsible for inappropriate replies and disrespectful behaviour.

5. Being self-deprived is one of the main reasons for increased challenging behaviour in teenagers. Children tend to spend most of their time on phones and tablets and whatnot, restricting them from getting a goodnight's sleep at night. Establish a rule that forbids them to use smartphones after bedtime.

6. Children go through a lot of stress and pressure. It takes a toll on their mental health, and sometimes, talking is not an option. It is essential to release that stress. Encourage your kid to exercise, meditate or involve himself in any physical activity, and it can be a great stress buster and mood booster.

7. A healthy diet can do wonders to your child's continuously changing moods. Unhealthy food habits can affect the mood of growing adults. Discuss the importance of a healthy diet. Limit the intake of sugar and caffeine, provide them with healthy snacks and meals.
